American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons
Description
American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons:

The Academy is the preeminent provider of musculoskeletal education to orthopaedic surgeons, other medical practitioners, and the general public. Our 35,000 members advocate for patients and help them maintain healthy bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons.

One in four Americans suffers from an impairment that impacts their ability to move. This can be devastating to people’s lives – impacting work, physical health and one’s family and social life. The good news is that patients across the spectrum of orthopaedic care — from the trauma patient in need of life-saving surgery, to the retiree in need of a new hip to enjoy a pain-free tennis game, to the child needing corrective care for a congenital deformity, or to a patient diagnosed with bone cancer – all have options to help them lead happier, healthier and more productive lives.

According to recent statistics, a startling 72 million Americans are clinically obese, and in every state at least 20 percent of adults are overweight. A major problem is obesity among our youth, with only one in four American school children getting an adequate amount of physical activity each day. The number of overweight children is rising at an alarming rate, with 13 percent of 6-11 year olds considered obese, a medical problem that has tripled in the past 30 years. Research indicates that moderate, regular weight-bearing exercise helps strengthen the skeletal system, reduces weight gain, and daily physical activity provides a healthy behavior model for our children.

This year’s AAOS TV PSA campaign is titled Sedentary, which encourages kids to maintain a more active lifestyle. It shows the creative avoidance of physical exertion by a pre-teen boy in daily interactions with his grandmother and his dog. The spot strikes a very humorous chord with viewers who will recognize these behaviors in their own families.
