Since 1896 Volunteers of America has supported and empowered America’s most vulnerable groups, including veterans, at-risk youth, the frail elderly, men and women returning from prison, the homeless, people with disabilities, and those recovering from addictions.
Goodwill Communications has distributed PSA campaigns for all the active military services except Regular Army, most of the reserve forces, the Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security and several non-profits which serve our active and retired military forces.
It is vitally important that our children and teens understand the world around them, because if they do not, they will not compete in a future that is largely without borders, and the need to understand many other cultures. Our work with National Geographic shows that many of our youth do not have a basic understand of geography and why it matters. The campaign we launched on their behalf addressed this important issue.
In the Spring of 2016, Goodwill Communications was selected to distribute a national TV and radio PSA campaign on behalf of the National 4 H Council, which is the non-profit partner of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) within the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons retained Goodwill Communications to distribute and evaluate several national multi-media PSA campaigns to encourage Americans to adopt a more active lifestyle.
As the sub-contractor to a video producer, we worked with the American Health Assistance Foundation for years, distributing PSAs pertaining to eye health, Alzheimer’s, heart disease and stem cell research. The creative for the PSAs was reasonably well crafted, and we distributed them in the normal fashion.
What if you could take a few simple steps to protect your children from hidden dangers in and around your home, would you do it? It is a rhetorical question, because what parent would not do whatever they had to do to protect the lives and safety of their most treasured possessions? Yet, the fact is, many parents do not do basic things to ensure their children are not endangered in their own home, including drowning in pools or being badly injured by furniture toppling over on their youngsters.
Even as the total population of America’s veterans shrinks, increasing numbers of U.S. troops have left the military with damaged bodies and minds – a large pool of disabled veterans that will cost the country billions of dollars for decades to come.
Trying to demonstrate the relationship between public service advertising and public awareness is very difficult, and it is rare that any organization pursues it. First, there are so many mass communications initiatives that can and do contribute to public perceptions towards any given social issue. Secondly, in order to track changes in attitudes, typically you must employ baseline research and tracking studies to measure change over time, which can be costly.
In 2007, we were retained by the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) to distribute two different PSAs dedicated to the same issue – global warming. EDF’s mission is to use science and economics to find practical and lasting solutions to the most serious environmental problems facing our country. EDF’s work spans the biosphere: climate, oceans, ecosystems and health. Since these topics are intertwined, EDF’s solutions take a multidisciplinary approach, working in concert with other organizations — business, government and communities.
